SIDN chooses i3D.net as new partner for DNS anycast platform

For a resilient and accessible .nl domain

i3D.net server in data center

We have chosen i3D.net as the new hosting partner for part of our DNS anycast platform. The decision enables us to reinforce .nl’s technical foundation and continue building an infrastructure that’s reliable, scalable and future-proof.

Switching to a new provider

For us as operators of the .nl domain – one of the world’s most successful and secure internet domains – it’s very important that our DNS infrastructure is always available and performs well under all circumstances. And DNS anycast is central to securing that aim. The system involves multiple identical DNS servers distributed around the world sharing a single IP address. Traffic is then directed to the closest or most reachable server. An anycast set-up increases both the speed and the resilience of the DNS, so we’ve been investing in the technology for some years. As we wanted to extend our anycast platform, we were looking for a new partner that could offer full support.

European partner with global coverage

We explicitly wanted a new partner that could meet our technical requirements, was aligned with our working methods, and had both a global network and strong European roots. The Dutch Cloud Community (DCC) played an advisory role in identifying suitable European service providers.

The choice of i3D.net is in line with our need for a globally distributed infrastructure, full control of routing through BGP-based anycast advertisements, API-controlled provisioning and an engineering culture where collaboration is central. It also supports our commitment to digital autonomy and transparency about where critical infrastructure is hosted.

Reliability through diversity

Our DNS infrastructure in focus

DNS anycast is now proven technology in the global Domain Name System. For some years, we've partnered with peers and service providers around the world to deliver the resilience benefits of anycast in the .nl domain. For example, we use anycast services provided by Nic.at (Austria) and CIRA (Canada). i3D.net will host the anycast platform that we operate ourselves, thus reinforcing the existing diversity of our DNS infrastructure.

Reinforcing .nl’s foundations

By working with i3D.net, we’ll strengthen the operational foundations required to assure the reachability of the .nl domain. Our multi-provider strategy and data-driven approach ensure that .nl remains available day in, day out for millions of users, now and in the future.
