Solliciteren en werken bij SIDN in coronatijd

When Jaap Weissink applied for a job at SIDN, his first interview was a Microsoft Teams video conference. So who better to tell us about joining SIDN during the pandemic?

What was it like, starting a new job in such unusual circumstances?

"Strange, but enjoyable. My first interview was virtual: we talked online using Teams. But things felt good from the start; I came away from that interview feeling positive about the job. My second interview was face-to-face. Coming into the office gave me a better sense of the kind of organisation I would be joining."

What was your first week like?

"For the first two weeks, I was working from home. I had a series of introductory meetings on Teams and I did loads of reading. SIDN has everything well documented, which is a big help for a newcomer. A detailed orientation programme had been devised for me, and I still refer back to the material for bits of information."

Is there anything you've found hard?

"Lack of social contact -- not being able to just walk round and see someone. It takes longer to build relationships when you can't drop by for a chat. I'm used to mixing and talking... getting to know people that way. There's not much scope for that at the moment, sadly."

What have you enjoyed most?

"The orientation period. One of my new colleagues was assigned to me as a 'buddy' -- someone I could turn to if I had any questions. My direct colleagues are generally very busy, but they're always willing to spare a couple of minutes to explain something on Teams." What was it like meeting the team in real life after a virtual start? "Since I joined, we haven't had the whole team together in the office at the same time. The team is divided into two sub-teams, which take it in turns to spend a week working in the office. However, to help me learn the ropes and get to know everyone, we've agreed that I'll spend time with both sub-teams."

How do you see your future at SIDN?

"Joining SIDN has been invigorating, because I'm seeing new facets of my profession. I'm expecting to divide my time between the office and working from home. The kind of our work we do can be done away from the office, but it's good to have personal contact with your team. Besides, I've been told that table football is a big thing at SIDN. I love table football, so I'm looking forward to the office league starting up again!"
