Mark started his job in SIDN's Finance Department on 1 April

Starting a new job in a pandemic, how is that?
For most of us, it's hard to imagine what it's like to change jobs during a pandemic. So we asked Mark Kerkhoven, one of SIDN's 'corona period newbies', about his experiences.
"Quite strange, actually -- starting work and still being at home! There was a lot to get used to in a short space of time: a new employer, new systems and everything... all on top of working from home, which I'd never done before. But it worked out really well. Everyone on the team has been really friendly and attentive."
"One member of my team was assigned to me as a buddy. She showed me all the financial management software we use at SIDN. A series of virtual meetings were also arranged, so that I could get to know everyone else on the team, as well as internal budget holders, HR and Communications. We used Microsoft Teams for the meetings. I was also lucky that the person who did the job before me was still around to show me the ropes. We've had a couple of five-hour video calls. Long sessions, obviously, but really useful in terms of enabling me to get started."
"I was given loads of reading material and the online staff meetings have provided a good picture of what SIDN does. For example, it was through one of those meetings that I heard about CyberSterk. I thought, 'Hey, what's that?' and made a point of learning all about it afterwards."
"I think that using Teams to explain how things work is a whole lot easier than doing it in the office while staying 1.5 metres apart. Imagine trying to look at a computer screen together without getting close!"
"Some systems didn't work properly on my laptop. I was able to log in, but couldn't do the things I needed to do. That was a pain for a while. But it's all sorted now."
"On Tuesday 2 June. The Finance team all came into the office for the end-of-month meeting. That was the first time I met several of my colleagues. Since then, we've been coming to the office once a week. Working together in an office has a social function: you get to know the organisation and the people better."
"First and foremost, I hope I'm here a long time. I like the organisation and I like the people. SIDN provides a lot of training opportunities as well. In the autumn, I'm planning to start a course that'll build up my financial management know-how. Hopefully I can continue developing from there."
