On Tuesday 12 May, we’re holding another SIDN TechTalk. This is a special year for us, because it’s 30 years since SIDN was founded and 40 years since the .nl domain was created. Plenty of reason to celebrate! We’re proud of our 3 decades looking after the .nl domain, one of the world’s biggest and most secure country-code domains. So of course we’ll be marking the anniversary in fitting style. The theme for the upcoming TechTalk will therefore be 30 years of SIDN and 40 years .nl. It's the familiar format: 2 fascinating Dutch-language speakers plus good food. So come to the SIDN TechTalk and get inspired. Register soon!
SIDN operates at the heart of the Dutch internet. Often in partnership with universities and other higher education centres. And often participating in national and international working groups concerned with abuse, security and data. We also maintain close ties with a variety of technical and other bodies in the Netherlands. As a result, we have expertise in many key fields, which we love to share with the internet community.
Technical professionals and students from the Arnhem region who are passionate about their field, open to new developments and keen to share their knowledge.
Don't go eating before you arrive! The programme includes an enjoyable, free evening meal.
Marc will give a guided tour of SIDN’s infrastructure over the last 30 years: from the time when .nl ran on a couple of servers and lots of pioneering spirit, to the modern, resilient and sometimes almost stubborn systems of today. Along the way, Marc will show you the highlights, ‘creative solutions’ and technical decisions that have led us to where we are now – some of which are quite amusing in hindsight. Take a seat for this journey back through 3 decades of technology… without a rollback plan.
Marc is Senior DNS Engineer and Product Owner with more than 20 years’ experience at SIDN. He has extensive knowledge of designing, securing and managing authoritative DNS services and global DNS anycast infrastructures. His expertise spans DNSSEC, zone administration, DNS publication processes and large-scale network infrastructures. Marc also has a strong background in ICT project management, security architecture and process optimisation.
Using personal anecdotes for illustration, Daniel will tell the story of the ‘birth’ of .nl and RIPE in Amsterdam’s Watergraafsmeer district. He’ll explain the individual decisions made along the way to boost autonomy, and he’ll finish by looking at strategies for the future. What have we learnt and what can we do now and in the future in the field of digital autonomy? Tell us what you think!
Daniel Karrenberg is one of the pioneers of the internet in Europe. In the 1980s, he helped to build EUnet, the first pan-European internet service provider. At that time, Daniel shared an office with Piet Beertema, .nl’s first operator. In 1989, he co-founded RIPE (Réseaux IP Européens), Europa’s main collaborative forum for internet coordination. In the 1990s, Daniel went on to spearhead formation of the world’s first regional internet registry, the RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) serving Europe, the Middle East and previously parts of Africa and Central-Asia. Daniel was CEO of RIPE NCC from 1992 to 2000 and Chief Scientist from 2000 to 2013. While at RIPE NCC, he led numerous initiatives, including introduction of the RIPE Routing Information Service (RIS), the global RIPE Atlas measurement platform, the DNS Monitoring Service (DNSMON), RIPEstat and, in partnership with NLnet Labs, the Name Server Daemon (nsd). In 2001, Daniel received the prestigious Jon Postel Internet Service Award "for two decades of outstanding dedication to the development of networks in Europe and around the world.” In 2012 Daniel was also enrolled in the Internet Hall of Fame.
