“At SIDN, you’re surrounded by experts who’re happy to help and share their knowledge. As a result, this internship has been great for my personal development,” says intern Metehan Yilmaz. “Also, SIDN is a relatively small organisation with an important community role, and I’ve been able to make a real contribution.” Metehan Yilmaz, Qamar el Amrani and Nikita van den Berg are all just completing 6-month internships with us. Each in their own field. Here, they talk enthusiastically about their experiences and what they’ve learnt. Our Corporate Recruiter Inge Loeff also describes the growth opportunities and supervision they’ve had.
You don’t need a technical background to do an internship at SIDN, and you don’t need to know about the internet infrastructure either. “I knew little about the world behind .nl,” says Qamar. “Fortunately, I learnt about it while I was here. My colleagues shared a lot of info about online security and digital resilience during SIDN Inside Live and at SIDN TechTalks. So I was able to stay informed.”
SIDN’s community role was important to all 3 interns. Nikita: “The organisation promotes problem-free, opportunity-rich digital living for everyone, including people with less developed literacy skills. At the interview I had when I applied, I could see how important that mission is to Inge. That motivated me even more to do my internship at SIDN.”
An open working atmosphere and engaged colleagues are defining features of life at SIDN, Nikita, Metehan and Qamar all agree. “Everyone was happy to help if I had a question,” says Qamar. “In every department and at every level.” Nikita adds: “People often asked me how I was doing, which made me feel like a proper part of the team. Some of them even knew the kind of language that our generation uses,” she chuckles.
As well as working hard, the interns took part in our team activities. From the weekly bootcamps to eating lunch together and visiting a local vegetable and herb grower. Qamar: “It was good talking to people from other teams at the get-togethers, such as the people at SIDN Labs. You get to know people better at a personal level.”
Metehan and Qamar both did their internships with our Business & Support Department. Metehan was analysing, redesigning and checking dashboards and making data comparisons. Qamar performed a competition analysis, looking at .nl and .com. She also investigated the contraction of the European domain name market and the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). Meanwhile, in our HR Department, Nikita looked into ways of improving inter-team collaboration at SIDN.
Motivated interns are very useful to SIDN. Inge: "We're a relatively small organisation, so an intern’s contribution really matters. At the start of their time with us, we decide together just what form their research will take. Every intern has their own supervisor, who provides professional and personal support. Together, we ensure that the work they do is a good fit with SIDN. For example, Nikita’s research led to practical recommendations on how we could improve collaboration between our teams.”
“Because interns are only here for a while, they’re able to look at our work processes objectively, from a fresh perspective,” Inge continues. “And we give them the opportunity to share their insights.” Metehan gave his take on things at SIDN Inside Live. As he recalls, “That was fun and exciting, because I presented my dashboard analysis to about 100 colleagues. Fortunately, it went well, and several people came up to me afterwards to talk about my project.”
An internship at SIDN is also an opportunity to widen your network. “My research involved meeting registrars and talking to professionals from other country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs),” says Qamar. “Also, Metehan and I attended a big healthtech show, and I went to the NIMA Marketing Day. The professional contacts I made at those events could be really useful in the future – when I’m looking for a job or somewhere to do my master’s research, for example.”
Some interns go on to join the SIDN team permanently. “They can progress to a starter’s role, if there’s scope,” Inge explains. “Our new Technical Security Officer, who started in March, had previously been an intern with us, for instance. And Metehan will be staying on over the summer to continue his analyses and other work here.”
Nikita, Metehan and Qamar are all approaching the end of their internships. “We’re now looking for another marketing intern to start in September 2025. But we’re always interested in hearing from students with ideas for research projects and work experience projects in other fields,” says Inge.
