Hello Registry gets ICANN approval as a registry service provider

New platform now authorised for delivery of registry services

Over the last year, our new Hello Registry platform has been through ICANN’s Registry Service Provider Evaluation Program. The purpose of the programme is to assess the capabilities of organisations that want to provide registry services in the upcoming application window for new top-level domains. And we’re pleased to announce that we came through with flying colours!

Background

From 30 April and 12 August, companies and other organisations will have the opportunity to apply for their own top-level domains (TLDs). That’s what the City of Amsterdam and KPN did in the last application window back in 2012, when .amsterdam and .kpn were given the go-ahead. To realise their plans, an applicant needs the services of a registry service provider – like SIDN. Our new Hello Registry platform, which we’re developing with our Canadian partner CIRA, provides the basis for our registry services. Tough requirements

We therefore needed to pass ICANN’s evaluation programme in order to offer our services to organisations applying for TLDs in the new window. And that was far from easy, because ICANN applies tough criteria to would-be registry service providers. After all, getting a top-level domain up and running and keeping it operational are long-term undertakings that demand a high level of stability. ICANN accordingly looked at points such as:

  • The reliability of SIDN’s Executive Board (SIDN Business B.V.)

  • The reliability of SIDN as an organisation

  • Security measures

  • Abuse prevention

  • Continuity in the event of a major incident

  • Global monitoring of technical systems

  • Capacity of people and technical systems

  • Organisation of our infrastructure/cloud environment

  • Compliance with technical standards (RFCs)
