At the end of 2025, there were 6,059,392 .nl domain names, slightly down on 2024 (6,179,686). The main drivers of contraction were a high number of business closures and a downturn in the number of start-ups in 2025. The picture was in line with the wider international trend of stagnation in the domain name market. With 6 million-plus domain names, .nl remains one of the world's biggest country-code domains.

All .nl domain names are registered through .nl registrars. The Dutch registrar community has about 1,000 members and is very diverse. It includes specialist domain name registration firms, internet service providers that offer a range of services including domain name registration, big businesses that register domain names only for their own use, and businesses that trade in existing domain names.

In 2025, registrars gave our services a score of 7.7 out of 10. That's slightly down on the 7.8 they gave in 2024, and on our target score of 8. Our Support Department and personal contact with our other departments came out best, with a mark of 8.2. We expect the new Hello Registry platform to have a positive effect on the way registrars feel about our innovation speed and our services in 2026.

We work to stop .nl domain names being abused for internet-based criminal activities, such as phishing, malware and fake webshops. Whenever we discover that a .nl domain name is associated with phishing or malware, we send a detailed report to the registrant, the registrar and the hosting service provider. Together, we were able to get phishing sites offline after an average of 20 hours in 2025.
