What are malware and phishing?
- Malware is harmful software. It includes programs that record what you type or hijack your computer for use in cyberattacks. Criminals often use existing sites to distribute malware without permission.
- Phishing typically involves sending an e-mail with a link to a website. So you might get a message that says 'Use this link to confirm that you want to continue using internet banking.' But, if you click the link, you don't get taken to your bank's website. You land on a fake site that looks as if it belongs to the bank. You're then asked to enter sensitive information, such as your account log-in or your PIN. Phishing mail used to be easy to spot because of spelling errors and other basic mistakes. But nowadays a lot of messages look very convincing. Links to phishing sites are also sent in text messages, WhatsApp messages and social media direct messages.
If problems are spotted on your site, Netcraft will mail you
Websites are regularly scanned for the Abuse204.nl programme. If malware or phishing are found on your site, you'll get a mail from Netcraft. Netcraft is our programme partner. They specialise in detecting things like malware and phishing. Mail sent for Abuse204.nl can be recognised from the programme title in the subject line.
What to do if Netcraft mails you
Contact your registrar (hosting service provider), who can help you get rid of malicious files. Your registrar can also advise you on preventing anything similar happening again.
If you don't resolve the issue, we may make your domain name unreachable
If the problems with your website aren't resolved quickly, we may intervene. In the final resort, we will change the registered name servers for your domain name. Then internet users won't be able to reach your website and therefore won't be at risk any longer.
Where do I report a .nl domain that I think is involved in abuse?
