Internet Innovation Award 2014

This was the first year of the Internet Innovation Award, which was introduced to give innovative and eye-catching internet-related initiatives the recognition they deserve. The jury chose EPP key relay from a list of ten nominated innovations, because of its importance for internet security.

EPP key relay: the secure transfer process for DNSSEC-protected domain names

A team of technical experts has been working to standardise a secure domain name transfer protocol for DNSSEC. The result is the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) key relay. In EPP key relay, the registry plays a pivotal role. DNSSEC key material is communicated from the receiving DNS operator to the releasing DNS operator via the registry, meaning that the transfer can be fully secured. PowerDNS Recursor version 4 supports DNSSEC validation

With the launch of version 4, the PowerDNS Recursor now also supports DNSSEC validation. The new feature is currently still experimental, but the developers say it works well. “The underlying design philosophy is that legitimate look-ups shouldn't be refused, since that results in sites and services being unavailable to end users.” Validation by the Recursor has been on the agenda for some time, but has had to wait for refinement of the DNSSEC implementation on the PowerDNS authoritative server. Protection against DDoS/amplification attacks has also been a high priority in recent years, leading to development of the dnsdist load balancer, for example
